Academic Program

Discussion Groups

Discussion groups are where most information is shared between colleges. These small groups allow delegates to share their college’s ideas and systems with delegates from across Australia. Each year the topics are selected by the delegates to focus on current issues and problems in colleges. An appointed leader, usually a returning delegate promotes interaction among all participants and facilitates discussion. Discussion topics this year will include;

  • O-week
  • Community service and the environment
  • Relations with administration
  • Inter-college activities
  • Traditions and college spirit
  • Social events
  • Non-alcoholic events
  • Integration of all collegians
  • Developing leadership in college

All the information that is gathered in these discussion groups will be printed in the Conference Report so that if you are unable to attend all the discussion groups, as it is not physically possible, then you can still read what other colleges had to input.

Workshops

The objective of workshops is to allow small groups to participate in interactive sessions led by people with relevant experience in the field. This hands-on experience allows delegates to discuss college experiences and learn more about issues affecting colleges while developing invaluable practical skills. Topics will include;

  • Publications and advertising
  • Sponsorship and fundraising
  • Goal settting and time management
  • Communication techniques
  • Enviromental issues
  • Incorporation
  • Changes in college

Professional Development Seminars

The Professional Development Seminars are a staple of NAAUC. They aim to teach a broad base of fundamental issues relevant in the running of organizations, student or otherwise.

These seminar style sessions are designed to empower students by passing on the combined knowledge and experience of the Association, instilling the appropriate responsibilities and expectations in the participants. This year particular areas of interest will include;

  • Mental health issues
  • Responsible service of alcohol
  • Event management
  • Operational professionalism
  • Effective changeover
  • Conflict resolution
  • Encouraging diversity
  • Giving value for membership

Role Development Seminars

The NAAUC Conference is directed to veteran college leaders to encourage and aid future leaders. The Role Development Seminars are a key tool in passing information to prospective office seekers and in sharing lessons learned – the hard way – from other colleges. Seminars will be presented on the following areas;

  • President/ Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Social officer
  • Residential Advisor
  • Inter-college Representative

Guest Speakers

One of the highlights of the conference is having the opportunity to listen to a variety of informative and inspirational guest speakers. Many of these speakers will give keynote addresses on particular topics relating to colleges, whilst others will give inspirational stories from their lives. Delegates can walk away from these presentations with some different perspectives on lifes passions and purpose. Here are just a few of the Guest speakers we have lined up for this year;

  • Don Markwell - Rhodes Scholar, previous Master of Trinity College, Deputy Vice Chancellor of UWA
  • Peter Dingle - Researches Active Learning and Success Strategies
