Students will be asked to reflect on their personal style of leadership, and discuss the qualities that may assist in bringing out the best in themselves and their colleagues.

Empowering, innovative and passionate female leaders are all around us, however, the challenges of being a woman in a position of leadership on res can be nuanced. This academic focuses on unpacking subconscious gender biases in leadership and provides tools to overcoming systemic barriers that may be in place at your residence.

Over the course of the hour we will work collaboratively and dig into ways your residence can make tangible changes to best support, respect and acknowledge women in leadership.

Due to the generally short tenure and fast turnover of residential leaders, long term strategic planning can be very difficult. This, combined with the often prominent burnout of student leaders at the end of their term often results in ineffective handovers.

This seminar will discuss how to create an effective strategic plan and how to ensure that your handover/changeover process is as detailed and clear as it can be so that the next leader feels confident and informed stepping into your role.

As residential leaders, most of us are required to assist in the planning and running of different college and community events. Whether that is as a Social Rep organising your college ball, as a Secretary organising an AGM, or as an RA organising a floor gathering, we all have a part to play in the process of bringing people together with events.

For many students, becoming an office bearer in a student club/student association will be their first experience in dealing with a range of regulations and legal responsibilities. It is the duty of office bearers to ensure their student club is complying with the law, and is maintaining the integrity of their student club process.

Throughout this academic, delegates will be given the chance to familiarise themselves with the general duties of an office bearer, as well as the legislation and regulations that govern these processes. It will also provide information on how to undertake these tasks effectively and efficiently to ensure the operations of student clubs abide by the law.

Every university residence in Australia faces challenges posed by the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs. It is crucial that student leaders today understand the evidence based approaches that residences and student leaders can implement to improve the lives of students.

This session will combine the science behind drugs, alcohol and addiction with discussion on how drugs and alcohol issues manifest in our communities. From these discussions, you will have the opportunity to develop tangible ways to improve your residences' drinking and drug cultures.

This academic shines a light on the impacts stress, uni, moving out of home and living in a communal environment can have on yourself and others, and aids your ability to recognise negative patterns of image obsession when they arise.

The session focuses on breaking down the stigma surrounding these topics and facilitates a guided discussion on approaching positive discussion from a leadership perspective.

In Australian university residences, it is crucial to emphasise the importance of understanding, respecting, and integrating indigenous histories, education, and culture. Indigenous students often come from diverse tribal backgrounds and fostering a learning environment that appreciates these distinctions is imperative. By acknowledging the unique realities and challenges faced by indigenous students, we can be the catalyst for meaningful change.

In the session we explore strategies involving committees, student representatives, and influential individuals, regardless of their official roles, to reignite interest and care involving personal stakeholders within university colleges and residences within Australia with the help of a well-known Aboriginal activist and guest speaker.

For many, masculinity is a complex and difficult topic that is often avoided in day-to-day conversation. By not addressing masculinity, we allow toxic mindsets surrounding masculinity to grow. As leaders in colleges, we are in a strong position to combat toxic manifestations of masculinity and prevent the harm it can cause.

This academic will explore masculinity both in all its forms, as well as how to foster a college community where boys can become healthy young men who connect holistically with their communities.

Mind the Gap explores the harmful consequences of our patriarchal society’s standards of gender, and details the disparities that exist between genders in today's world.

This academic acknowledges the existing gap, and delves into how you can begin to bridge it within your residence.

We will be translating issues surrounding gender disparity into the residential context and discussing how student leaders can make a positive difference. As a group, we will explore how we can transform residential cultures to be more inclusive and support your fellow residents to smash through the glass ceiling, no matter how high.

Sex culture impacts every young person living on res. Navigating your own emerging sexual identity amongst the toxic norms of double standards, shame, and unrealistic media portrayal, is no easy feat.

In this academic we promote sex positivity and sexual safety, and foster inclusivity and acceptance surrounding sex in order to encourage residences across the country to build a sex culture that's rich in education and free from stigma.

Through discussion, education, understanding, and respect, delegates will walk away better equipped to question, challenge, and change sex cultures within their residences.

Beyond Our Walls is a session that will allow you to critically examine the ways your community is viewed from external perspectives. You will be encouraged to reflect on the connection between collegiate life and culture and how they impact your residence and reputation.

While most delegates can clearly articulate that positions within residential communities will provide you with incredibly unique knowledge and experiences, this session will dive into how you can carry your unique experience into your professional careers and find ways to enhance the positive reputation of your residential community.

This session considers the way residential communities provide opportunities for individuals to develop in character and realise their full potential.

Residential life is a special and unique experience. As students living in colleges and university residences we know that, but sometimes we struggle to articulate the benefits.

Over the course of an hour, you’ll be asked to reflect on your own experience, the history of your college or residence, and what the opportunity of leadership can provide you with, throughout your time in your role. We’ll examine some of the driving forces behind the residential experience, and break down what the experience can and does provide for young people.

This academic helps to orient yourself over the conference week and obtain a clearer picture of what you can get from NAAUC and the National Conference.

The Cultural Audit prompts important discussions surrounding the role and impact ‘traditions’ have on a residence’s cultural fabric. This session asks individuals to take a step-back, remove the blinders, and evaluate the continuing purpose of various traditions, events, rituals, language and behaviours that are accepted in their residences, asking whether those are relevant and conducive to forming the culture students want for their residence.

Over the course of an hour, you will have the chance to reflect with your counterparts on how you might adapt long standing traditions to better suit the modern residential experience.

Welcome to Welcome Week! In this session, we are going to give you some tips and tricks we have from planning and organising your own orientation weeks. Organising a safe and fun Welcome Week for your incoming students is very important, and we want to help you with that. Welcome week is an exciting time, but can also be very stressful. We’ll give you our tips on how to keep calm under pressure, especially when things go wrong. Finally, we are going to play devil’s advocate: making sure you know absolutely everything you will need so that YOU are going to have a smooth and enjoyable week.

Before you are equipped to create positive cultures and build exceptional communities, you need to have an understanding of how to work productively with one of your most important stakeholders, the staff and management teams within your college or residence.

Being a common challenge faced by students across the country, this session will explore the motivations behind different groups within your college or residence, and delve into how you can position yourself to foster more productive relationships.

Over the course of an hour we will explore three key ideas; developing shared purpose, playing with impact, and building trust, and reflect on strategies we can employ to advance our goals in each area.
