NAAUC’s response to the NSSS Report

NAAUC welcomes the insights provided by the National Student Safety Survey, all who contributed to the survey, and to the Social Research Center for shedding further light on such an important problem. The incredible bravery shown by survivors in sharing their experiences is crucial in the effort to reduce incidents of harassment and assault.

Understanding the gravity and importance of the findings of this report, we have taken time to respond  in an appropriate and informed manner. Our intention and aim of this media release is to provide a response that is representative, not only of our team member’s individual views, but of our association’s ethos as a whole. To be the peak representative body of a group of individuals we must strive to be aware of the current issues being faced by all.

The prevalence of sexual assault and sexual harrasment on university campuses has been and still is unacceptable. Universities, and residences in particular, should be safe and inclusive places that foster students’ creativity, curiosity and learning. Leadership teams, both staff and students, need to do more to address this ongoing problem.

The findings of the survey indicate the concerning prevalence of sexual assault and sexual harrasment occuring in university residences. NAAUC believes strongly that university residences enhance the lives of young people, contributing to community connection and belonging. Residences cannot let this issue persist if they wish to support young people through their university experience.

We recognise that the results highlight a range of nuanced cultural issues, revealling that instances of sexual violence are disproportionately perpertrated against already marginalised groups; including people of culturally diverse backgrounds, indigenous peoples, women, and transgender and non-binary people (NSSS National Report, 2022). These results imply that there are deeper systemic issues when it comes to the prevalence of sexual violence on campus. In response to these confronting results, NAAUC will use these findings to inform our educational program around healthy relationships and community safety.

At NAAUC we value the inclusivity, safety and betterment of students in all residences and will continue to promote these values through education, advocacy, and empowerment. NAAUC will always support residences who strive to improve the safety, health and happiness of their students in every possible way. NAAUC will continue to support student leaders across the country in their efforts to evolve their communities. Students must be central to this effort, and must be empowered within themselves in order to affect change in the places they live.

NAAUC will remain committed to confronting the problem of sexual assault and sexual harrasment in university residences, and continue to champion student empowerment when addressing this issue.
